About the School
We know we’ve done our job when our kids skip to school
Mount Hawthorn Primary School was established in 1906 when 43 children began their school day on the corner of North Beach Road (now Scarborough Beach Road) and Hicks Street (now Flinders Street). In 2015 Mount Hawthorn Primary School has an enrolment of over 900 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school upholds its rich traditions and embraces innovation and current educational thinking.
Mount Hawthorn Primary School is located 10 minutes from the Perth CBD in the suburb of Mount Hawthorn. The school population is drawn from a high socio-economic area, where most parents are employed in professional and semi professional fields. Education is highly valued by the parent community and this is reflected in the strong tradition of consistently high attendance across family generations.
An offsite Kindergarten in Leederville houses our Kindergarten students and offers several groups 15 hours per week. Students from Pre-primary to Year 6 attend the main school site on Killarney Street. There is also a separate Education Support Centre on the same campus, autonomous from the primary school. A state of the art library was built in 2008 and is shared with the Education Support Centre. Currently Music, LOTE (Italian), Physical Education and Art are offered as specialist programs.
In 2010 the Director General of Education, Sharyn O’Neill, commissioned an Expert Review Group to conduct a review of the school due to consistently high standards of performance over a number of years. The Director General endorsed Mount Hawthorn Primary as a school demonstrating exemplary performance.
The school provides many opportunities for our students to enjoy learning and develop socially, physically, academically and emotionally to reach their potential. Our highly qualified, enthusiastic staff, along with a very supportive community, works harmoniously to strive for excellence in all facets of school life.
The school has experienced teaching staff, who strive to improve their expertise by regularly accessing professional learning opportunities. The Leadership Team comprises a Principal, four Associate Principals and several Level 3 teachers.
Mount Hawthorn Primary School is the hub of a vibrant community with a clear vision. As an Independent Public School we have a strong and justified reputation proudly addressing the needs of our Kindergarten to Year 6 learners. Our most recent review stated, ‘Mount Hawthorn Primary School has a personalised approach to each student and a positive student/teacher relationship as a key element of the school’.
We have a saying, “Let’s Keep our Students Skipping to School”.
Since the amalgamation of the Mount Hawthorn Junior and Senior Primary Schools in 2008, we have enjoyed the benefits generated by the larger number of student enrolments but have also maintained the culture of junior and senior schooling.
By providing positive, child specific educational challenges and learning opportunities, students from Mount Hawthorn go on to a wide range of secondary schools, with many securing scholarships. Our commitment is to the ‘whole child’ and we aim to foster lifelong learning habits and skills. Many of our students continue their educational journey at tertiary institutions across diverse disciplines.
The school provides a professional learning environment for all staff and has been recognised for best practice in teaching. We aim to grow and challenge our staff and maintain pace with innovative and current teaching strategies that further meet the needs of our students.
We enjoy the support of an active and progressive Schools Board and a highly energised and focussed Parents and Citizens association, both reflect the strong community values of the people in the township.
