Evidence-based teaching

Mount Hawthorn Primary School offers a full and robust curriculum, catering for the needs of all students. Teachers employ consistent student engagement strategies and daily review to maximise learning. We use whole-school, evidence-based programs to teach phonological awareness, synthetic phonics and spelling, and use an approach consistent with the science of reading.

Our curriculum aligns with the WA Kindergarten to Year 10 Outline the WA Department of Education’s Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting policy and procedures.

Music

Our Music program is recognised as one of Western Australia’s largest and most accomplished in a public primary school. In addition to our thriving classroom music program, students can be a part of our choir, orchestra or band and perform in multiple concerts each year at premier venues. We partner with the Instrumental Music School Services to provide small group instruction in woodwind, brass, strings and percussion. Student musicians have the opportunity to attend an annual residential music camp to build skills and connect with other musicians.

Italian

Italian language and culture is taught immersively through projects in fashion, cuisine, music and sport. Annual highlights include pasta making, gelato tasting and the Year 6 Italian dinner at a local restaurant. Mount Hawthorn PS students regularly feature in the list of winners at the annual WA Italian Teachers’ Competition.

Physical Education

Our physical education program fosters a lifelong joy for physical activity. Students are equipped with the fundamental knowledge and skills to participate in a wide range of sporting activities. Students participate in faction and interschool carnivals for swimming, cross-country and athletics, and the school sends teams to interschool competitions in AFL, basketball, hockey, modcoss, netball and soccer.

Visual Art

Our exemplary visual arts program exposes students to a wide variety of visual art styles and skills. Students investigate the visual elements of art (space, texture, form, shape, colour, line and value), as well as being provided with the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of art tools, materials and mediums. Our talented young artists create artworks that are displayed on campus and throughout the community.

1:1 Technology Program

Students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they progress through primary school. Our 1:1 Technology Program (iPads) for Year 5 and 6 helps students to use ICT effectively to create and communicate ideas, solve problems, and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school.

Margaret Kindergarten

Our youngest Mount Hawthorn Primary School students learn and play at our Margaret Kindergarten, located on Richmond Street in Leederville. Students participate in foundational literacy and numeracy activities each day, and also enjoy play-based opportunities to learn and interact creatively. Our 5-days-per fortnight Kindergarten program is the perfect preparation for children to be ready for when they enter Pre-primary at ‘the Big School’!
