Term 1 2022 – Sue Kenny and Anita Putt

GYMNASTICS

In Term 1 our Pre-primary and Year 1 students participated in a 6-week Gymnastics program run by Northern Districts Gymnastics Association. Eden and Daniel did a fabulous job guiding all our students in their fundamental movement skills and providing exciting opportunities for our students to try new skills and activities. All our students were clever enough to try forward rolls and display different ways to balance on the small beam.

TENNIS

This term has seen the start of the Tennis Tournament for Year 4-6 students. The Tennis Tournament has a long-standing tradition at MHPS where all Year 4- 6 students have an opportunity to pair up and play mixed doubles in a knockout competition. The Grand Finals are played in front of their peers and the winning pairs are awarded medals for their effort, performance, and fair play.
The Year 5 Grand Finals were played this week. Congratulations to the winners Theo S and Neve H-S on a dominant performance, winning in 2 straight sets. Well done to Tyson H and Aerin L for putting up a good fight.

The Year 6 Grand Final will be played on the last day of this term between Max Y and Neve P versus Angus T and Tilly B. Good Luck! To all of these students.

The Year 4 students are presently busy getting through their rounds and hope to have their Grand Final early next term.

MODCROSSE

This term MHPS has been very fortunate to have the expertise of Jimmy Kinsella and Leslie from Wembley Lacrosse to provide expert coaching to all our Year 3- 6 students in their Phys Ed classes. Jimmy has been handing out flyers with information regarding an upcoming schools’ tournament on Thursday 7 April after school from 3.30 – 5.00pm at the Wembley Lacrosse Club, as well as information on the upcoming 2022 Modcrosse Season. The students have all been doing well with their stick skills and are starting to understand the rules and strategies surrounding the game.
Well done everyone.

At Mount Hawthorn we have a different sport every week in Phys Ed. One week we played modcrosse and we had a lacrosse player from Wembley Lacrosse come to teach us how to play. When I had a go I felt I was good at it and it was fun, so I enrolled myself into it and now I play for Wembley Lacrosse under 11’s. You should come down too!

100KM RUNNING PROGRAM

All year groups have started the whole school running program at MHPS. This program has been going for many years and it involves our students running a few times a week to reach the final goal of 100km. There are several award milestones along the way for them to achieve.

SWIMMING

Faction Swimming

We were very fortunate to be able to run our faction swimming this year, although it did have to be modified slightly, due to COVID, to only include our 50m events. Congratulations to all those students who participated, they swam very well in a very short time. Some of these students have now been selected for the Interschool Swimming Carnival on April 6. Good luck Mount Hawthorn Swim Team. For the first time in a while Shakespeare was the winning faction followed by Axford, Braithwaite and Menzies. Now is a good time to start your swimming training and lessons to prepare for the swimming carnivals in 2023.

Interschool Swimmers Breakfast

Thank you to the P & C who have kindly offered to supply a small `Breakfast for Champions` for our Interschool Swimming Team to be held at Braithwaite Park on Tuesday morning April 5. At our breakfast we will announce our Year 6 captains for 2022 and the swimmers will be motivated by a surprise guest speaker. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered their time to help with this.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

Our Mount Hawthorn Interschool Swimming Team has been training very hard over 6 sessions before and after school at Beatty Park to prepare for the Churchlands Network Interschool Swimming Carnival to be held at HBF Stadium on April 6.

A special Thank you to Clark Carlson who has led the coaching to prepare our team for this event. Also, a past Mount Hawthorn student, Mia Angeleski has been at the pool to help, thank you Mia. Clark from Swimtek has also provided much needed swim caps for both our faction carnival and our Interschool team. We are going to look fantastic with these new style caps at the Interschool.
