I have enjoyed seeing all the creative Chinese New Year artworks around the school recently.
I really appreciate the support of this community with the COVID restrictions, and it is great to see students happily arriving at school with parents wearing their masks.
The P&C AGM is scheduled for Monday 14 March, and I encourage parents to volunteer for a role. This is your chance to become involved, improve our school grounds, meet new people and build this great community. See more information below from the P&C.
On Monday we were able to publicly acknowledge our Year 6 Student Councillors and Faction Captains with a badge presentation at Braithwaite Park. Mrs Nash gave a great speech about the responsibilities of being an outstanding role model and young leader. I wish our student leaders all the best in their esteemed roles.
Today our Year 6 students attended Team Building Games at Menzies Park and had a great time working together and solving problems. I wish to acknowledge our Year 6 staff for their efforts in coordinating such an important event for our Year 6 students.
COVID Reminders:
In just a couple days a historic day will be upon us – February 22, 2022 or 2/22/22. And what’s more, it falls on a Tuesday!!!
Just to bring a bit of fun, vibe and colour we have decided to hold a Two Two day.
On 22 February we are encouraging children (and staff) to wear a Tutu or alternatively dress with two things that stand out. i.e. Two odd socks or get creative i.e. Dress up as pairs.
We ask for a gold coin donation if possible. Some of the money raised will go to Bali School and the rest will be determined by the Student Councillors.
BEFORE SCHOOL
Parents, if your child arrives before 8.30am they are to wait in the undercover area (no playing on the adjacent playground i.e. dizzy wizzy). This also applies if you are with them. You are welcome to stay with your child until 8.30am but no playing.
VISITORS ON SCHOOL PREMISES POLICY
The safety and wellbeing of all students in our care at Mount Hawthorn Primary School is our priority and commitment. All schools are required to comply with the Department’s Visitors on School Premises Policy. Parents are not required to sign in when dropping off or picking up their child up during the normal school drop off/pick up times. If you arrive at a different time, even if it is to drop off a lunch box or another forgotten school item, you are required to present at the front office and sign in before entering the school grounds. It is important we know who is on our school site and why. We thank you for your support with this.
COVID
We will try to balance the need to ensure you are informed of the latest developments, and not to overload you with notifications. Parents are always welcome to email the school leadership team MountHawthorn.PS@education.wa.edu.au so we can assist if it relates explicitly to the school. Other queries can also be directed to the department helpline for parents on 13 COVID (13 26843).
Process for school:
As you may be aware, we are receiving more ongoing notifications of children in isolation. Parents please email your class teacher and cc Admin MountHawthorn.PS@education.wa.edu.au to advise.
Given the latest department advice, we have made some changes but hopefully we can still stay connected with our community.
Merit Awards
Merit Award presentations will commence on Friday 25 February. Unfortunately, we can’t have parents attend so we have fine-tuned our processes. A Year 6 leader will visit each class on a Friday morning to read out Merit Awards (9.00am). The class teacher will take a picture of your beaming child to send to you.
Assembly Items
Unfortunately, the traditional model cannot go ahead. Our talented teachers will still produce an item on their scheduled Assembly date. This will be filmed and a link sent for you to view.
Social Media Use
This is a timely reminder to parents/carers not to share any images on social media that include any of our students, as not all parents have provided permission for their child’s image or name to be published. Any sharing of a student’s image or name without the appropriate consent could lead to legal action.
Perisse Pitsikas, Associate Principal
We have had a wonderful start to our music program already, with new and continuing instrumental students showing such excitement beginning their lessons. Students from Years 3-6 are learning violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, brass and percussion through IMSS (Instrumental Music School Services).
This week, orchestra and choir ensembles commenced in the Hangar and next week, our Year 6 students will begin band practice on Thursday morning in the Undercover Area.
In class music we have been busy singing, learning about making and reading rhythms, creating raps and playing percussion instruments. Every Friday afternoon we are having a sing-a-long over the PA. It’s wonderful to hear music in the air at Mount Hawthorn PS and it is a great way to lift our spirits.

Our students are creating some fantastic work with the talented Art teachers. Pre-primary to Year 3 have just finished their Chinese New Year activities, so the junior art room resembles a Chinese Hawker Stall and embodies the Chinese New Year spirit. Year 3 to 6 have created an incredible “welcome back to school” collaborative mural in the senior art room. If you would like to see what they are working on, follow them on Facebook and Instagram at @teaching_kids_art (Marni Adlam PP – 3) and @art_teacher_life (Kate Driscoll 4 -6).
Request from SPS Art Room
We need your junk mail; any supermarket catalogues would be great! Please drop them to the Art Room ASAP, the project is starting Monday!
With the evolving situation and in support of the measures taken by the school to reduce the risk of COVID-19, the P&C have made the decision to cancel the sundowner next Friday. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram @mhpspc for other ways you can connect with us, including our upcoming information night before the AGM in March.
The P&C is holding the AGM, Monday 14 March at 7:15pm. We will advise of the location very soon as we monitor the Department of Education requirements.
With several people stepping down from roles in 2022, we would love to see some new faces join the P&C. In particular, we are looking to fill the roles of President and Vice-President as well as conveners of a number of subcommittees including Events and Grants. A full handover is provided, and ongoing support and training are also available. We will be profiling these roles in the upcoming weeks leading up to the AGM so again check out our socials, attend one of our upcoming information sessions or email mhpspc@gmail.com for more information.
Registrations are open from now until Friday 25 February for Year 2 – 6 students interested in playing netball for Mount Hawthorn Netball Club in the winter season of 2022.
