MAYS STORY
The “Together Towards the Future” Mural
The family of May O’Brien visited last Friday and were so appreciative of the school community. We heard some stories about May’s challenges in the early part of her career and it makes all the recognition worth it.
Her staff file in the Education Department was stamped “only to teach Aboriginal students” and Miss Harbeck had to have community meetings and door knock the community to ascertain if the community would accept an Aboriginal Teacher. A little ironic, as May taught many of the migrant parents how to speak English.
Reconciliation is important, not to apportion blame but, more to understand.

THIS WEEK
This week has been a true reflection of the talent on display at our school. Our Year 6 students have just completed their camp at Ern Halliday and they represented our school so wonderfully and we have had positive feedback from all involved. I would like to thank the parents and staff who made this highlight possible for our students.
Secondly, the “Music Under the Stars” concert once again showcased the talents of our students under the guidance of our amazing music teachers. A huge shout out to Mrs Hardman and the Music Committee parents for organising this great event.
The Edudance Concerts were once again a highlight of Term 4 for the school. It was lovely to watch our students introducing the dances and the level of expertise and talent demonstrated by our students.
BUSY BEE
Tomorrow morning, the P&C are holding a Busy Bee between 9.00 and 10.30am and I encourage you to SIGN UP HERE if you can spare a little time. This will create the foundations for our gardens for our junior students for next year.
SCHOOL REVIEW
A School Review was conducted late in Term 3 and the Report is being analysed by the Schools Board. We are really proud of the work which reinforces our Business Plan and will set us up for our next planning cycle.
NEW PAVING AT KISS N RIDE
For the past 6 months Julia form the P&C and I have been looking at the pallets of pavers thinking one day we may have to lay these things! Enter Clae Morgan from Morgs Handyman Services and school Dad, who jumped into a telephone booth and emerged at “SUPER CLAE”, he laid the pavers over 2 days and saved the world! Mr Mackesey and Julia (and their backs) are eternally grateful!
YEAR 5 MARKETPLACE
This term we have been learning about economics and financial maths including how money is used, managed, spent and earned. In collaborative groups, we had to design and create an attractive product to sell on market day.
On Friday, 19 November 2021, Year 5 set up stalls ready for an amazing, exciting ‘Marketplace’. There were a lot of stalls selling original products such as tie dye tote bags, stress balls, jelly soaps, slime, bracelets and many more appealing items.

MUSIC NEWS
CHRISTMAS CAROLS ASSEMBLY- THURSDAY 16 DECEMBER
On Thursday 16 December, our last day of school, we will be having our Christmas Carols Sing-a-long Assembly in the Hangar from 9:00 – 9:45am for Pre-primary -Year 6.
Everyone is encouraged to wear something in the spirit of Christmas and families are invited to join us. Merry Christmas everyone!

CAROLS IN THE PARK
The Annual Christmas Carols in Braithwaite Park, are happening again this year on Sunday 12 December commencing at 6.30pm. Come early from 5.30pm with a picnic if you wish. Our school choir will start the proceedings by singing 4 songs. Come and enjoy singing along to some of the lovely songs of Christmas. Carol booklets and candles will be available for a gold coin donation with the proceeds supporting the chaplaincies of Mount Lawley and Churchlands SHS. This event is brought to you by the Mount Hawthorn Community Church, with thanks to our sponsor The City of Vincent and Smoke and Mirrors who provide the audio equipment and staging.
This is a COVID safe event and we are following State Government guidelines to keep everyone safe. Please remember – Stay home if you are unwell, maintain social distancing, wash hands or sanitise regularly and scan the Carols QR Code upon arrival at the park or add your details to the register. Hope to see you there!
CONGRATULATIONS
On Friday 5 November Lia W represented Mount Hawthorn Primary School at the WA School Sports Aquathlon event. The event held at Champion Lakes consisted of a 1km run, 200m swim and another 1km run. Lia placed second in her age group in the event and has been selected in the State Team for this event and is able to compete and represent WA in the National School Sports event in Queensland next year.
FLOREAT LIONS CHRISTMAS CAKES
The canteen has restocked these delicious cakes and puddings. Puddings are $13.00, 1kg cake is $13.00 and 1.5kg cake is $17.00. They will still be available next week. Floreat Lions are a wonderful Community Partner for our school and we encourage you to buy a cake to support them this year.

SCHOOL BANKING
Tuesday 7 December is the final day to do your banking and collect a prize. See you at the Harbeck centre from 8:15am. If you have not banked for a while, you are still eligible for a prize so please come as this will be your last chance to bank at school. As mentioned in the last newsletter, the program will not be returning to schools in 2022. The P&C would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have been involved in supporting this program over the time it has been at Mount Hawthorn.
COFFEE CATCH UP
P&C (The C is for Coffee) The P&C is a great way to get involved with the school and meet new people. We are always welcoming of new faces. If you’d like to know more about what we do, come and have a chat with the President and Vice-President, Julia and Belinda, Friday 10 December in the back garden of the leaf and bean from 9.00am. All are welcome!
