For Term 1 2021

It is great living in a multicultural community and it has been a terrific start to the school year. We really appreciate the support of the community with the COVID restrictions and it was great to see so many students skipping into school with parents wearing a variety of masks. I still have an issue with my glasses fogging up and I have had to return home a number of occasions after forgetting one of ten masks.
I understand that it seems a little contradictory that we are able to have a Sundowner and gatherings outside under the COVID guidelines, however we are not allowed to have more than 6 parents in a classroom. I also understand that it has been an item of discussion and debate with parents especially around the Parent Information Sessions. These meetings are valued by both teachers and parents and are always well attended. With the current COVID Phase 4 guidelines we are not able to conduct them due to the social distancing rules.
So what are we going to do about it?
Our commitment is to continue to work with the School Board and P&C to navigate our way through the next few months, which will continue to throw curve balls. That all said it has been so good to see the students settled and as with a renewed resilience as only kids can have.
THIRD PARTY SERVICE PROVIDER PERMISSION
In 2021 Department of Education created a Policy to protect information shared with third party services. This new process requires guardians to consent for apps and websites that we use to collect student information. Most families were sent a link via Flexischools on Wednesday 10 February to complete the consent ‘form’ online. We have attached it here for those parents who do not use Flexischools or have not yet completed the form. Each student needs a separate consent form to be completed before they will be able to access any devices at school. We ask that forms are completed by COB Thursday 18 February 2021.
As a school we have added all the apps and websites used across the school and permission is for your child’s entire schooling at Mount Hawthorn Primary School unless you withdraw it in writing.
The form has four parts to complete. For more information and to download a printable copy of all consent forms visit the school website.
ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT
Also, on Monday your child will bring home the Acceptable Use Agreement form, this was revised last year with consultation from the school board resources sub-committee. Please read through with your child, sign and return to school ASAP.

Protecting children in their digital worlds is an ever-evolving task for Australian families. Now more than ever parents are looking for guidance in how to manage screen time and navigate the world of games and social media.
We are therefore pleased to help our parent community by offering a crucial and engaging education session with ySafe, Australia’s leading provider of cyber safety education. This practical, strategy-rich session will cover the most important points that all families need to know about online safety, covering key information about social media and gaming, screen time recommendations and step-by-step instructions on how to set up a cyber safe home for kids of all ages.
If you’ve ever struggled with getting your kids off their games and into bed, worried about the content of the games that they are playing or felt concerned that your child was spending too much time in the digital world, this workshop is for you!
Please register for this event by following the link provided. This is an important school event for all parents to attend https://bit.ly/mounthawthorn
We need 10-13 parent helpers to time and record for a full hour. Tasks are not difficult and the support makes the process fast and seamless. Please email Anita Putt if you can help out.
For students entering Year 7 in 2022.
The Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance program application deadline has been extended in response to the delayed start to Term 1 due to COVID-19. Applications now close at 11.59pm Sunday, 14 February 2021. Late applications are not accepted. Families need to apply on our website.
This is a timely reminder to parents/carers not to share any images on social media that include any of our students, as not all parents have provided permission for their child’s image or name to be published. Any sharing of a student’s image or name without the appropriate consent could lead to legal action.
At Mount Hawthorn Primary school we are committed to not only developing and nurturing positive relationships with parents but also providing opportunities to enhance parental involvement in our fabulous school community. This not only strengthens our community relationships further but utilizes the extensive expertise of our parents ensuring greater outcomes for our students.
The schooLINK6016 initiative establishes a supportive ecosystem that interconnects school, students, parents and community. Parents (Grandparents too) can register their details to clarify ways in which they can assist the school. The short questionnaire is designed to identify skills that you have which we will benefit from. While not limited to, it is particularly helpful to parents who work, but want to still be involved in the school or parents who are not sure how they can help. Please click on this link schooLINK6016 to find out more and register your willingness to assist.

The dental van will be on campus during Terms 1 and 2. All students who are enrolled in the Dental Program from Pre-primary to Year 6 will be seen by the dentist during this time. Enrolment Forms for all new students (and Pre-primary) will be sent home shortly. If you have any questions please call Brenda Jones on 0408 926 794. Please note, we are closed on Fridays.

Welcome back from the P&C! We are very pleased to have been able to get some trees planted on the tiger turf over the school holidays. This is something that has been on our to-do list for some time now and I’m sure the parents waiting will appreciate the shade at 3.00pm. Work also started on the kiss and ride paving over the holidays and we look forward to seeing some more trees go in there as well as all the name pavers that were purchased last year. Thank you to everyone that supported this fundraising initiative. Pedestrian safety has been improved again with the City of Vincent adding a raised platform over Matlock Street near Ellesmere. It is absolutely fantastic to now have a dedicated space to cross at that end of Matlock. We are still waiting for Main Roads to finalise what is needed for our crossing on Scarborough Beach Road and hoping it won’t be too much longer.
2021 will be the final year for many of our committee members so it would be great to recruit some new members who will be able to stay on for future years. If this sounds like you or you’re even a little bit curious, please come along to our AGM, Monday 8 March 7.15pm.
