“As the refugee ‘crisis’ continues to dominate mainstream media, Ziba Came on a Boat imparts empathy, humility and understanding to young readers who will grow respectfully from encountering this book.” South Sydney Herald
Ziba Came on a Boat is a well written book with beautiful, flowing illustrations. It is a story, based on true events, about a young refugee’s brave journey across the sea, to make a new life after losing everything. It was published in 2007, and has won the WA Premier’s Book Award, and shortlisted for the Early Childhood Picture Book and the Children’s Book Council Awards. It is written by Liz Casey Lofthouse, and illustrated by Robert Ingpen. Surprisingly, Liz and her book are extremely close to our own principal, Mr Mackesey.
How they knew each other is an interesting story. Liz grew up with Mr Mackasey’s sister through school and was his wife’s best friend. The two backpacked together in Thailand, and became good friends. Liz was dedicated to helping orphans and refugees and organising concerts to raise money. Liz unfortunately died of Melanoma in 2017 and is dearly missed by many, including Mr Mackesey.
Ziba Came on a Boat is a beautiful picture book about a young girl called Ziba. The book alternates between flashbacks of her old life, and then back to the present dealing with rough waves. Mr Mackesey himself says that it’s a fantastic book. Parents are encouraged to buy it to support the organisation below, and because it teaches children about refugees, and gives them a better understanding of the world around them.
Ziba Came on a Boat will be sold for $20.00 at the school Edu Dance (eftpos available) concerts, or at the school office (cash only). All proceeds will go to the Mandalay Projects, a charity that helps refugees have a better Christmas, and a better life. Please donate to this worthy cause. As Mr Mackesey says ‘books last forever’, and if that’s true, you are definitely going to want this book.

EARN AND LEARN
Our Earn and Learn STEM equipment has arrived! We had amazing support from our parents and we had 78500 points to purchase STEM resources for the school. This year we purchased 12 sets of Learning Lab Robotics kits. These resources are open ended construction kits designed to interact with micro:bits in order to create programmable moving constructions. We also purchased specialised science equipment and robotics equipment to be used with our existing Bee-Bot resources.
Thank you for supporting our school and I know that our students will enjoy using the new resources for years to come.

This year some of our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the APSMO Maths Olympiad. The Maths Olympiad is a competition made up of a series of difficult Maths problems completed over a period of 5 months. Thirty-two students took part in this year’s Olympiad and gave up their time after school to challenge themselves. Every student who took part in the Olympiad should be extremely proud of the effort they put in. I would like to congratulate the following students who scored highly in the Olympiad and were presented with awards at a recent assembly:
Year 5: Zeke T – Highest score in Year 5 at Mt Hawthorn Primary School and ranked in the top 10% and Lily B and Calloway B ranked in the top 20%
Year 6: Leanne G – Highest score in Year 6 at Mt Hawthorn Primary School and ranked in the top 10% and Toby S ranked in the top 20% and Joshua T ranked in the top 25%
The Maths Olympiad will be taking place again in 2020 for any Year 5 or 6 students who are keen to take on the challenge.

THE GOATS BIG CAMP OUT
Last Saturday was the Mountain Goat’s annual highlight – the Big Camp Out on the school oval. We were once again blessed with perfect weather and all had a great time, despite the sprinklers coming on unexpectedly at 1:30am! The old favourites were there with the ever-popular treasure hunt, dodge ball and campfire marshmallows, and we had some new ideas with a story corner and a big blow-up slide. Thanks to all those who helped out through the event. That brings the 2019 Fathering Project programme to a close, we hope to have more great events in 2020. If you have any feedback, or what like to get involved, please drop us a line on email@example.com
The uniform shop will no longer stock art smocks this year. It was stated on the booklist that we will, so we apologise for any confusion this may have caused. We can recommend Target, Best & Less, Big W, Kmart, Officeworks or Spotlight stores for stock.
