At the end of the term in Week 10, your child will receive a Semester Progress Report via email. Please ensure your current email contact details are correct for delivery. A recent survey of staff indicates that many teachers have had regular meetings with parents across the term to discuss student progress and your child’s report should reflect these conversations. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of your child’s report, please make contact directly with the class teacher early in Term 3.
IN TERM SWIMMING
Swimming commences for Years 2 and 3 in Week 9. Notes have been sent home and are due back by Monday 17 June. We recognise through parent feedback that the ‘winter months’ are not ideal for swimming lessons and we have negotiated strongly with the In Term Swimming Directorate Coordinator to consider changes for 2020. We have just confirmed swimming will occur for all our students (PP- 6) in Term 1 and Term 4 (Summer months) next year.

YEAR 5 NEWS
On Tuesday the 11 June we went to the East Perth Cemetery and Peninsula Farm. We learnt about the history of the Swan River Colony. I found it really interesting. I learnt a lot about how people lived back then and how much food they got and how much money they had. We also learnt that the more things they brought with them the more land they got.

On the Tuesday 11 June the Year 5 students went on an excursion to East Perth Cemeteries and Peninsula Farm. The tour guide showed us all the graves of the famous people who were buried there. Then we broke off into groups and did a scavenger hunt. After we had completed that, we got on the bus and drove to Peninsula Farm. When we got there, we were put into groups. Each of the groups learnt about the history of the house, weighed out the food rations for a child and an adult and then sketched the house.

Things I learnt in Bike Education:
It’s safer to not cross over lanes, or overtake randomly.
Ring your bell and put your left, or right foot down when you brake,
You should put your left or right hand out when turning
Look when you cross roads and driveways.
Thanks Mr Slee for helping us be safer bike users!

CONSTABLE CARE – BIKE ED
Last week the Year 1 children attended the Constable Care Safety School to learn about road safety. They had the chance to ride around life like roads, learn about train crossings, zebra crossings and road safety with the very important message of Stop, Look, Listen and Think.

Does your family have a soft and crunchy recycle bin or bag? WES says get started today!
REDcycle is a recycling program that diverts flexible plastics – the ones you can’t put in your kerbside recycling bin – from landfill and turns them into a material that can be used to manufacture new products.
The best method is to bundle all your soft plastics into one bag and take it to a REDcycle bin located in most metro and large regional supermarkets. These plastics are then recycled into plastic school furniture.
The MEZZ Woolworths has a REDcycle bin out the front.
SCHOOL BATTERY COLLECTION
Collection of used batteries from our school battery bin will commence Monday 24 June 2019.
Drycell batteries include AA, AAA (single use or rechargeable),C,D,buttonbatteries, 9V, 6V and cordless powertools.
Makuru – Noongar season which is the early Winter and occurs from June and July
Season 4 is known as Makuru.
Makuru is when the first rains begin.
It is cold and wet weather with strong westerly winds.
Time for the Noongar people to travel inland, towards the shelter of the hills, to hunt kangaroos, emus and possums.
From the P&C
The Mountain Goats’ Amazing Race Around Mount Hawthorn took place last Sunday. Despite less than ideal weather almost 70 teams took to the start line resplendent in their best fancy dress. Thanks to all those who gave their time to help out at checkpoints, and those who made their premises available or donated prizes. The City of Vincent once again supported the event with Mayor Emma Cole once again fulfilling MC duties. There was some stiff competition in all prize categories and some record times set around the course.
We have been successful in obtaining a COV Environmental Grant which we will put toward the “STEPup: MHPS Tree Legacy Project” this year. Each year group, from Pre-primary to Year 6, will plant a tree in a planter box, decorated with a mural designed and painted by the children. The planted tree will follow each cohort around the school as they progress through the years. As each year group graduates, a tree planting ceremony will be held, thereby leaving a ‘tree legacy’ behind at MHPS.
Year 6 graduation shirts have now arrived; payments are being accepted for the pre-ordered sizes now. Payment can be made through QKR or at the Uniform Shop on Tuesday afternoons.
Also a reminder that the Uniform shop is closed the last Tuesday of the term and orders won’t be processed until week 1, Term 3.
Our busy bee is coming up. Join us Saturday 29 June, across the school grounds for some sweeping, raking, mulching and general tidying up. Many hands make light work so we’d love lots of volunteers – kids included – to make it a fun, productive morning. There will be a sausage sizzle afterwards. Sign up HERE
