A reminder to parents that tomorrow Friday 31 May is a School Development Day and students do not attend school.
We sent out and urgent call for canteen volunteers today as some of our regulars are sick and guess who came to help out – John Carey!
He is visiting all local school canteens to highlight the need for parent volunteers in schools. If you can give an hour or two of your time please sign up HERE.
Our Mount Hawthorn Mountain Goats (Fathering Project) are planning their next Amazing Race (see information below). We encourage all our dad’s to sign up to receive information about this fantastic support network.
BUDDY CLASS ACTIVITIES
Today Year 2 Room 7 and Year 6 Room 19 welcomed the start of winter by having a buddy PJ Day. We all wore our PJs to school and then enjoyed many activities centred around Antarctic Penguins. Students wrote a winter senses poem in groups of 4, then with their buddies they researched 1 of the 7 types of Antarctic penguins and wrote an information report about it. After this, it was onto penguin craft and writing a spine poem about a penguin with their buddy. Buddies enjoyed their lunch together while watching Happy Feet and trying to pick out all the different types of penguins. To finish the day off, it was only fitting to have a milo and cookie!
Emma French – Year 6 Teacher
Winter is a frosty blue
It tastes like warm apple crumble
The smell of strong cinnamon
Winter looks like a grey cloudy sky
You can hear the pitter pattering of rain
Winter feels like a warm blanket

FACTION CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday 21 May, in superb weather conditions, all students from Year 3-6 competed in the school’s annual Cross Country Championships at Menzies Park. All students are to be congratulated on the spirit in which they competed. A huge thank you to all teachers for their outstanding support of another very successful carnival.
Congratulations to Axford on winning the carnival! The winning shield was presented to faction captains Toby and Emily.

RSPCA BLANKET AND TOWEL DRIVE
Going into the cold of winter, the RSPCA will need blankets to help keep their sheltered animals comfortable and warm. Starting Tuesday 4 June and ending Friday 7 June, you have the chance to donate your old towels, sheets and blankets to the RSPCA via the school office.
Thank you! Mia Beatty, RSPCA Junior Ambassador.
Reusable Drink Bottles
Make sure you have one reusable drink bottle. At school make sure it has a label on it with your name.
Plastic water bottles are a major contributor to landfill with 370 million bottles going to waste every year.
MHPS students we have to help! DO NOT allow anyone you know to buy a drink in a plastic bottle. Use a drink bubbler or your reusable drink bottle.
Djeran – Noongar season covers the cooler period of the months April and May
Season 3 is known as Djeran.
Djeran is the Autumn season.
The weather starts to get cooler. Noongars made their mia mias (shelters ready for winter. Seeds and bulbs were collected for food. Noongar women soaked Parrot bush flower to make a sweet honey drink.
From the P&C
The P&C’s Election Day Bake Sale and Democracy Sausage Sizzle was made possible by the time and efforts of our wonderful volunteers, talented parent bakers, and a very generous donation of buns and jam donuts from Mount Claremont Village Bakery. A big thank you goes out to everyone that gave their help and support throughout the day!
We are continuously seeking volunteers in the canteen. It’s a really great opportunity to see what happens at school during the day and your children will love seeing you. There are three 1.5hr shifts each day. Tasks are very easy, like making sandwiches and counter service. You don’t need to commit to be a regular, can just do a one-off shift here or there. Please sign up-HERE
WINTER SOUPS AT THE CANTEEN
The Canteen’s delicious daily winter soup specials have started. Check out the canteen chalk board and choose from Pea and Broccoli, Carrot and Lentil, Indian Spiced Mixed Pea & Coconut and more. All are lovely and mild for the kids and now packaged in compostable containers.
Sunday 9 June 2.00 – 4.00pm will be the second running of our Amazing Race around Mount Hawthorn. This event was huge last year and we are planning to make it even bigger and better. We’re looking for some Mums to volunteer to run checkpoints from their house, so if you live in Mount Hawthorn and are keen to be part of the fun, then drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org
To cater for younger and older kids we are offering the choice of a shorter or longer course. We recommend the shorter one (approx 2km) if you have kids in Kindy thru Year 1 in tow, with the longer course (approx 4km) more suitable if participating with older kids. There are no restrictions either way, so just go with your instincts. We will start and finish in Braithwaite Park and there will be a sausage sizzle at the end for all participants, along with some other fun activities
We’d love for all of our teams to get dressed-up for the event and turn Mount Hawthorn into a mass of crazily-dressed families. Local MLA, John Carey, has generously donated the prize for best dressed, so it’ll definitely be a competition worth winning! There will be various other prizes available on the day.
We were successful in helping Ms Myers obtain a National Science Week Grant to be carried out later in the year. The grant supports school STEM activities in National Science Week.
The grant round is administered by the Australian Science Teachers Association and funding is provided by the Australian Government.
Mount Hawthorn Primary School Rocketing National Science Week to the Moon!
During National Science Week all students from K TO Year 6 at Mount Hawthorn Primary School will be engaged in a variety of hands on STEM activities based around rocketry and how we can and have travelled to the Moon.
MID-YEAR BUSY BEE
On the morning of Saturday 29 June, we are holding a busy bee to tidy up the grounds. We will be sweeping, raking, hopefully mulching and generally tidying up. There are no special skills required and with plenty of helpers there should be a nice community feel. We’ll have a sausage sizzle at the end and all family members are welcome to join you at the sausage sizzle (and/or help with the busy bee). Please sign-up HERE
Last year’s Entertainment Book’s expire at the end of May. To purchase a new one or renew your subscription and support our school, just click HERE
