20 September 2018
Spring is in the air and we are just about through a really busy and very productive term.
In Term 3 we have enjoyed Science Week, Book Week, One Big Voice, Band Concert, Athletics, Basketball, Bike Education, Italian Performances, Mathematics, Artist-in-Residence and World of Maths. Let’s throw in a Lap-a-thon as our final event for the term to celebrate and begin a well-earned holiday!
We look forward to seeing all the students return to school on Tuesday 9 October 2018 for the start of Term 4.
Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN student reports have been sent home with each child this week. The school will analyse the data which looks solid across all year levels. However, our school is about more than one test on one day, and we pride ourselves on providing a broad program to cater for the individual needs of all our students. This has been evident in Term 3 when our Music and Athletics programs have really shone. I appreciate the efforts of our Specialist teachers Katie Hardman, Anita Putt and Sue Kenny and all the teachers concerned who make these programs happen.
Our P&C has funded works at our Kindergarten, contributing over $30,000 during the past 2 years. The children enjoyed a great day with the Kindy Obstacle-a-thon yesterday, with the funds raised being used to provide more nature based play spaces. The Kindy campus is managed by the City of Vincent and we are continuing discussions to plan for the future, with funds preserved to update facilities for the Kindergarten students.
It has been fantastic to see the development of the Athletics program over the last 3 years, which has culminated in our school placing 3rd at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. Our students were very well prepared and I thank all the staff members who gave up their time to train the team in the mornings, which was evident in their performance at the carnival. I was especially happy to see the school spirit displayed by our team; they competed hard with smiles on their faces in a way that would make all our students proud. We look forward to bringing back the trophy over the next couple of years.
I would like to thank all the parents who came along to cheer on their children. It was a fantastic atmosphere and well-coordinated by our Pre-primary team. This event was about more than just cupcakes – all students were involved and active at all times and they performed a variety of different activities. We will explore this model further for next year, as it provides a strong sense of community especially being held on the school grounds, with our Year 6 leaders having such a strong role in the organisation and supporting the staff.
Check the school website for results and more pictures of the Athletics Program.
The Friends of ANZAC Cottage Inc is delighted once again to partner with the Mount Hawthorn Primary School on “Operation ANZAC Revamp”.
This involves the revamping of two bus stops, one in Kalgoorlie St, close to ANZAC Cottage to reflect Gallipoli the occasion that gave rise to the Cottage’s construction. The other bus stop, located on ANZAC Road, near the intersection with Kalgoorlie St will reflect Nui Dat, the Australian Task Force Base during the Vietnam War. This pays tribute to the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (WA Branch) that, in the 1990s and early 2000s, took on the daunting, but ultimately successful task of restoring ANZAC Cottage to its former state.
Engineers from the New Zealand and Australian Defence Forces will be working together to construct a sandbag ‘footing’ which is a component of the bus stop revamps. This work will begin on September 18 and conclude on September 26. The revamp will be completed by the addition of murals appropriate to the themes of each bus stop. These will be painted by Drew Straker, a well known artist at the Mt Hawthorn Primary School on Wednesday 10, Thursday, 11 and Friday 12 October 2018.
The Friends of ANZAC Cottage Inc would like to express their grateful thanks to the funding bodies that have made this imaginative project possible: the City of Vincent, the Bendigo Bank North Perth Branch and Rosewood Care Group. Acknowledgement also goes to the generous co-operation and collaboration of the New Zealand and Australian Defence Forces and to Mount Hawthorn Primary School.

The Student Councillors would like to thank our fantastic school community for dressing up and bringing in donations to support our farmers during the drought. We donated $1405.50 to The Australian Lions Foundation Need for Feed program.
Last Tuesday 11 September two Year 6 teams represented MHPS at the Perry Lakes Basketball slam series conducted by Basketball WA and School Sport WA.
Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship and competed competitively at a high standard.
Congratulations to the boys team who were runners up in the All Stars division. Many thanks to Lee Deshon and Alisa Fidler for coaching.

Congratulations to our Mount Hawthorn Area Band and Dale Pointon on the outstanding performance at Band Festival on Friday 7 September. All students have worked so hard to polish the three songs which they performed and represented our school magnificently. Thanks to our parent group for your support.
With a very busy remainder of 2018, I have included a table of events for your convenience. This includes events for all Mt Hawthorn students as well as Band, Orchestra, Choir and IMSS students. Please click HERE to access these dates and thanks in advance for your continued support.
This week we were lucky enough to see EChO from WA Symphony Orchestra presented by Libby Hammer. It was so great to see and hear a live performance by such wonderful musicians.
