Welcome back for Term 3. We have another busy term for students with Science Week, Book Week and both Faction and Interschool Athletics Carnivals. The Grounds and Gardens team and volunteers have had another very constructive holiday break with Stage 2 of the Oval Project completed for the commencement of the term. The long jump pit has already seen action this week with the thumbs up given by Mrs Putt and Mrs Kenny. Our thanks to Travis Lithgo, Chris Gwynne, Trevor Haliburton, Jason Mascurine, Tracy Denham, Scott Yelland, Simon Allen, Jonathan Lawe Davies and Brad for all their hard work.
As a staff we will be concentrating on the priority area of writing and all classes will be trialling aspects of Talk for Writing, which has been very well received by both staff and students.
The new Student Councillors will also be leading a campaign for road safety around the campus which will include writing articles for the newsletter and many other initiatives.
The P&C will be running the annual disco, which is a favourite for students and deafening for the coordinators, along with planning for the Community Fair in October. To stay informed come along to the next General P&C Meeting on Monday, 31 July 2017.
I have included a link to the plans for the new build which will start early next year. The planning for the build commenced in late 2015 with a brief from the School Board of maximising play space for students.
The plans do involve the removal of some trees including the Moreton Bay Fig currently located in the Pre-primary playground. Any removal of trees is regrettable, however we are committed to working with the P&C Grounds and Gardens Committee to ensure there is a Tree Replacement Plan in place for the future of the campus. The Education Department policy is to plant four trees to replace any removed as part of a building program.
The plans were drafted in late 2015 with consultation of the School Board and were shared early last term at a meeting including representatives of the Board and P&C.
At the completion of the build the school community will have a facility which will accommodate the needs of our students.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Caz Shurmer, Lou Terry, SIM teachers and the other parent helpers who made the Music Camp 2017 possible.
This opportunity allows our students to come together and improve their skills, perform and cement their love for music as well as have fun and build relationships with other music students. On behalf of all the music students, we thank you and appreciate all your time and effort.
For a full report and information about the SIM selection process see the Music News on our school website.
We warmly welcome our Term 3 Language Assistant, Cecilia Deleo from Milan. Cecilia is being hosted by the Rodgers and Stevens-McGillivray families.
Cecilia is studying Languages and International Relations at Milan Catholic University and has a keen interest in Education.
I am really enjoying my time at Mount Hawthorn Primary School.
The students are creative and fast learners. They try their best to learn Italian through different, playful activities. They are very friendly and I look forward to learning from them as well.

To celebrate Science Week all students are invited to participate in our school STEAM Challenge based around the REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RETHINK philosophy.
The STEAM challenge is to create something NEW and REUSEABLE from something you may normally just throw away. Consider our FUTURE EARTH and design an object that you will continue to use again and again! This is an at home activity. Entries are due to your classroom teacher on Monday, 14 August 2017.
