From the Principal
Wow that term went quick! The one aspect of school that I missed most was being with the students and I have really enjoyed visiting classrooms throughout the term and observing, listening and laughing. On Friday I learnt about the planets at the Year 3 Assembly and fractions from an enthusiastic Year 2 class. A Year 1 class was making kites linked to a STEM activity and a Year 4 class proudly showed me their work on convicts (see article below). The Year 6 ‘s were informed about High School by Mr Dunne from Churchlands SHS and a Pre-primary class was making healthy pizzas. There was plenty more happening, however I did have to read some emails.
I would like to wish all families a wonderful break and look forward to hearing stories about the holidays. I am off to commence a Harvard Fellowship with 20 colleagues in Boston for 10 days so I’m packing my jacket with the leather patches and I will see you late in the first week of Term 3.
A reminder that the first day of Term 2 for students is Monday, 17 July (this is NOT a School Development Day).
COMMUNITY FORUM
We had very good attendance at our Community Forum last night, working collaboratively with community members, City of Vincent and Wembley Police to develop strategies to reduce anti-social behaviour on campus outside of school hours.
STUDENT SAFETY
When students arrive at and depart from school, the staff are always mindful of their safety as they walk home, catch public transport or are collected in a private vehicle. It has come to the notice of staff and a number of parents that outside the perimeter of the school the safety of our students is being compromised. This is happening because driving, parking and walking signage is being ignored. If this signage is ignored there is a likelihood that perpetrators will be fined by The City of Vincent rangers.
Two parents Ms Tracey Denham and Mrs Karen Sheilds, together with Year 6 students who make up the Public Relations leadership team, have formed a committee to implement a number of strategies to address this very serious issue. Next term the school community will be informed of these strategies. To commence the campaign the PR leaders will be handing out faction tokens on Friday morning to the students whose family members are demonstrating safe behaviour on the road and paths around the school. We are looking forward to a big improvement in the care of our precious students in the streets surrounding our school.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Mount Hawthorn finished 4th from 9 schools with 1st place to Wembley , 2nd Woodlands and 3rd Floreat Primary Schools.
Great results built on a solid preparation coordinated by Mrs Putt, Mrs Kenny and Raf Baugh. Raf volunteered his time which is much appreciated and we can see a big improvement since he commenced the Trackstars program.
Would you like to help create an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ plaque for MHPS?
We have recently been provided with a $1000 BankWest grant to create an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ plaque to be established on the school site. We’re seeking involvement from our local Noongar/Wadjuk families and students and would love to hear from anyone who could assist with advice, ideas, contacts or practical assistance in design, creation or placement.
If you are interested in being involved email me t.j.w@live.com.a before the end of week 1, Term 3. We will be endeavouring to complete this small project during Term 3 with the involvement of a class group.

MUSIC NEWS
Band Open Rehearsal
Last Thursday 15 June, the Mount Hawthorn Area Band consisting of children from Mount Hawthorn PS, Kyilla PS, Maylands PS invited parents to their morning rehearsal to see the amazing work they have done so far. It was a credit to Mr Pointon and the students who have worked so hard. They are sounding sensational. Special thanks to Lou Terry and the team of helpers for organising the open rehearsal and for the yummy hot chocolate and muffins.
Music Camp
On Sunday 16 July and Monday 17 July, Year 5 and 6 band and orchestra students will be attending a music camp at Ern Halliday, Sorrento. This exciting event is organised by our amazing parents and is a great opportunity for students to improve their skills with the help of School of Instrumental teachers and invited guests as well as participating in team building and fun activities. This is also a great lead up to band and orchestra festivals which both our ensembles have entered.
Crown Theatre
On Monday, 21 August our school choir (The Hawthorn Hummers), and Orchestra will be performing at Crown Theatre as part of the Schools Make Music concert series. Both the Hummers, led by Mrs Hardman and the orchestra, led by Mrs Carter are rehearsing and getting excited for this amazing event, where they will be performing in front of a crowd of two thousand people at Crown Theatre. Â Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.
We are incredibly proud of our talented stars and wish you all well for your upcoming performances.

APPLICATIONS FOR ENROLMENT ARE NOW OPEN
You must apply to enrol your child in a public school for 2018 if they are:
- starting Kindergarten – 4 years old by 30 June 2018
- starting Pre-Primary (first year of compulsory school) – 5 years old by 30 June 2018
- changing schools.
Mount Hawthorn Primary School is a local intake school and can only accept students in our local catchment area for Pre-primary to Year 6. In Kindergarten, priority is given to local intake students and will only accommodate outside boundary students if capacity allows.
Parents can download an application for enrolment to submit to the school with proof of residential address (for example: utilities account, lease agreement) and a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Parents will be notified of the outcome of their application later in the year.
You are not required to complete an Application for Enrolment for Pre-primary if your child is currently enrolled in Kindergarten at Mount Hawthorn Primary School and you plan to stay at this school for Pre-primary. We will request Proof of Address in Term 4.

CONVICT TALKS – Year 4 Room 24
This term Room 24 has been learning about the history of convicts on the First Fleet. We have been researching and typing our own story which we have been presenting this week in class. Students have learnt about the crimes these convicts committed and where they were sent. We have been encouraged to dress up and bring props, pictures and PowerPoint’s to help explain the convict’s journey across the ocean to Australia.
So far we have had some amazing presentations!
My convict name was Lucie Brian, and I am only 10 years old. Â I stole a book and a basket of apples worth 6 shillings. Unfortunately I was caught and was sent to Australia for 8 years. Â For my talk I also decided to sing a song, Bound for Botany Bay. Â We have learnt so much this term about lives of people living at this time.

CONGRATULATIONS
Four former Mount Hawthorn PS students were selected in the U/23 Australian Lacrosse team currently playing in the Asia-Pacific tournament. Connor Davies (Co-Capt.), Keegan Davies, Sam Koczwara (Co-Capt.) and Ashby Dennis all began playing lacrosse in our school mod-crosse team.
They traveled to Japan for warm-up games and then to the tournament in Korea. Â
National teams from Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand and an ASPAC UNITED team. Jennifer Townsend

A trolley for the collection of donations for fair stalls is located outside Mrs Mears office. Please make sure any bags left on the trolley are clearly labelled, noting which stall/class they are for.

- Kindy Purple are hosting The Dress Up Box at the school Fair. We would welcome any donations of new or used (in reasonable condition) costumes. Don’t forget to include costumes for Halloween, Harmony Day and Book Week. Please leave your unwanted costumes in the fair trolley or in box outside Kindy Purple.
- Do you have access to old desks or school equipment? We would love to borrow it to set up an old classroom.
