Students enjoying the Italian incursion
Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome to Mount Hawthorn PS. Being a member of any school is a privilege, being a member of Mount Hawthorn is much more. The school community values displayed during this mornings Open Day and Young Innovators Expo was enough evidence for any newcomer of the wonderful partnerships, clever students and work standards that make MHPS what it is. I have found students to be fabulously courteous and focussed, staff have strong ownership and those members of the parent community whom I have met could not be more welcoming.
l would like to thank Carol Selley and the Associate Principal’s for their support during my transition. MHPS is a complex site and their knowledge and council has been critical. I would also like welcome Marise Fitzmaurice to the school, who is the acting Manager of Corporate Services for Term 4, while Marjorie Commijs is taking some long service leave.
My permanent location is Yanchep Beach PS, as foundation principal, (opened in 2014, http://ybps.wa.edu.au), I share the same, deep connections for YBPS Dale Mackesey feels for MHPS. Although not needed, this just provides greater motivation to ensure student, staff, parent and community expectations are met during my tenure.
For the time being my tenure is six months, although after just a few weeks I already know I’d like to stay! I will make sure the school board is kept well informed during this period.
Term four is busy in all schools, I would like to ensure class planning, staff selections and curriculum planning are well underway internally and will be transparently communicated or reported over the coming weeks. Thank you once again for your warm welcome and I look forward to meeting you.
Matt Jarman
Principal

ITALIAN NEWS
Ciao a tutti! We have had an exciting start to the term learning about Commedia dell’arte: a form of Italian theatre developed in the 16th century. We were fortunate to have actors visit from the Melbourne based theatre company Cultural Infusions and students watched two spectacular shows: The Greatest Pie in the World and The Captain. Both shows were based on improvised, slapstick comedy sketches and introduced students to the masked characters of the era such as Arlecchino, Pulcinella and Colombina. Students enjoyed the performances and especially loved the audience participation. We plan to practise this style of theatre in class in the next few weeks. – Signora Monisse
