20 September 2016
Hello Mount Hawthorn Community. I am very excited starting Term 4 2016 as your new Principal. I know I have some very big shoes to fill, following on from Ms Selley and Mr Mackesey, but equally know I am surrounded by many dedicated and caring staff and parents. Leaving my current school, Yanchep Beach Primary School – which I helped open in 2014, was not an easy choice but such is the reputation of Mount Hawthorn Primary School, it was made a little easier for me. I look forward to meeting everyone and working alongside you, after your undoubtedly well- earned school break.
We need 1-2 volunteers per class to assist with the School Lap-A-Thon being held on Friday, 23rd September from 1:00pm. Proceeds from this event will go towards the new shade sail at the junior school and the re-turf fund for the school oval.
All parents/family members are encouraged to come and cheer on the kids at this event! Please let your class teacher know if you are able to assist.
The Department of Education has allowed all public schools to have six school development (student free) days in 2017. So that we can align with most of the schools with the Churchlands Network, I presented dates to the School Board for approval and it was agreed that the following would be the school development days:
Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st January | School Development Day.
Teachers return to work. No students at school. |
Wednesday 1st February | Students commence school. |
Monday 24th April | School Development Day.
No students at school. |
Tuesday 25th April | ANZAC Day – Public holiday. |
Friday 26th May | School Development Day.
No students at school. |
Monday 17th July | School Development Day.
No students at school. |
Tuesday 18th July | Students commence school. |
Monday 9th October | School Development Day.
No students at school. |
Tuesday 10th October | Students commence school. |
Please mark your calendar now so that you know when and where you and your children need to be.
It does not take magnificent horticulture skills to see that our oval is under stress. I have had some experts come and look at the surface and they have determined that the damage being done is wear and tear. With hundreds of feet running, jumping and kicking on it, any grass would lay over. The Department of Education has agreed to spend some money to get some repairs made. The work on the oval will be undertaken weekly during Term 4 or over the December/January school holidays.
As this is the last newsletter for Term 3, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the staff and students a very happy holiday. I hope that everyone enjoys their time away from school and recharge their battery before the rush to the end of the school year. Thank you to all of the staff for their work throughout what has been another busy term.
Mount Lawley Senior High School has a GAT Information Evening, on Tuesday, 18th October, 2016. This would be relevant to your current Year 5 students.
Please see the below link for all relevant information to be shared with your school community. Please also note that the sessions are very popular and RSVPÂ is essential.
On Tuesday, September 6th this year’s Student Councillors were guests of Eleni Evangel the member for the Western Australian Legislative Assembly seat of Perth. In one of the Parliament House dining rooms, the students enjoyed a silver service three course luncheon with Ms Evangel and her Personal Assistant Ms Manifis (Picture above).
There are currently vacancies in the Kindergarten and Pre-primary Program for 2017 at Mount Hawthorn Autism Early Intervention Centre. Please contact the Early Intervention Program Coordinator Kaylene Allen on 9443 4022. Mount Hawthorn Autism Early Intervention Centre is one of 11 Department endorsed early intervention programs for Kindergarten and Pre-primary students with Autism. The program targets age appropriate academic engagement and achievement. To be eligible for the program students need to:
Kindergarten students attend on full days on Wednesday and Thursday and half a day on Fridays. Pre-primary students attend Full days on Monday and Tuesday and their local school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Yesterday some very lucky children received sports equipment when their names were drawn out at the faction raffle. All of the tokens that had been collected in the latter part of the term were dumped into huge buckets and over 10 first prizes and 20 consolation prizes were given away. Children were thrilled to be able to select a new tennis racquet, football, soccer ball or netball.
I would like to thank the P&C Association whose generous commitment to the school, as this means that we can afford to give children great prizes.
Children who have had their names drawn out at assemblies and/or been part of the winning faction have visited Braithwaite Park during the past term. Congratulations to all of the children in Axford who were the winning faction and enjoyed a sausage sizzle last week. I wonder who will win next term! (Perhaps it will be Braithwaite!)
A very special thank you goes to Mrs Cherrie Fletcher and Miss Elishia Vearing, who have been overseeing the competition.

Please keep Saturday, 24th September 2016 from 9.00am to 12.00pm, free. We need volunteers for some or all of the time.
We want to make the garden along Killarney Street beautiful with new plants. The jobs for Saturday morning are:
Morning tea is supplied! You don’t need to be a ‘green thumb’ to do the work – just willing! If you have time, please contact Jodie for RSVP and queries.
In trying to create a safe place for students to cross the road, the P&C along with Carol Selley and the City of Vincent have been busy this year implementing traffic improvements at the intersection of Woodstock and Matlock Streets closest to the school oval entrance. During the Term 3 school holidays new crosswalk speed-humps will be implemented along Matlock Street.
We have also recently been successful in our application for a type B Crosswalk which will be trialled in Term 4.
We are now seeking expressions of interest from any person in the community who may be interested in participating in a 4 week trial. This will be a paid position, for 2 hours per day, Monday to Friday for 4 consecutive weeks. The rate is $22.00 per hour, a uniform will be supplied by the P&C, and training will be provided by the State Traffic Unit. A Working With Children Card will need to be to be obtained by the successful applicant.
If you know of a parent, friend, neighbour, retired person, relative or anyone who may be interested in the position on can you please ask them to email Karen Sheilds, for more information.
