Principal’s Message
I was really pleased to hear that three ex-students are representing Australia in Lacrosse and one of our ex-students, Nicole Hamilton placed in top ten at the recent Rottnest Channel swim. Now we are not taking all the credit for the numerous successes, however the boys got a taste for Lacrosse representing the school and Nicole had talent and worked hard.
This newsletter will have a focus on Physical Education, which is one of the exemplar programs running at the school. Ably led by Anita and Sue, the programs give student’s opportunities and develop fundamental movement skills. Students also get further opportunities to represent the school throughout the year in team sports and some individual events such as the cross country.
I have had a few queries about the fantastic Uni Active program running before school for Pre-primary and how parents can get involved. The school has recognised that the early acquisition of skills is important. We currently have a partnership with the Human Movement Team from UWA, which involves running morning sessions for students from Pre-primary. We are keen to extend the program to include students up to Year 2 if there is enough parent interest.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to Matt Sevior for donating the fantastic new faction and school flags for use at sporting carnivals and other school events. They looked fabulous at the Faction Swimming Carnival!
COMPUTER CLUB
It may seem a strange link to a Phys Ed newsletter, however one of our wonderfully talented parents, Adrian Keating trialled a computer club last year, which was well received by students who did some amazing work. Adrian is keen to run this program again during lunchtime on Mondays, during Terms 2 and 3. He needs a network of computer savvy or interested parents who might be willing to help. The club is suitable for students in Year 3 onwards. We are holding a meeting for parents who are interested in contributing to the computer/science club at the Harbeck Library on Monday, 23 March at 7.00pm.
From Sue and Anita
We have another very exciting year of sport planned and we are looking forward to sharing all our sporting achievements across the school with you. We have had a very busy start to the term, with the senior school attending in-term swimming lessons in Weeks 3 and 4. Time trials were also held in preparation for our Faction Swimming Carnival. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with recording and timekeeping.
FACTION CAPTAINS
Congratulations: Menzies – Emma and Hamish, Braithwaite – Eve and Lachlan, Axford – Indianna and Ryan, Shakespeare – Julia and Riley.
SWIMMING
FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Shakespeare and the 2014 champions Braithwaite were neck and neck at the end of the individual events. It was down to the relays which earn massive points. Shakespeare won three relays then Braithwaite won two. Too exciting! Three wins was enough and Sensational Shakespeare won the carnival. The last time Shakespeare won was 2009. GO SHAKESPEARE! Beware, other Faction’s, because Shakespeare has said they are planning to win cross-country and the athletics as well!
Shakespeare 1st – 386 Braithwaite 2nd – 379 Menzies 3rd – 333 and Axford 4th – 256
Congratulations to Axford, the smallest team on the day had the loudest roar when it came to cheers and easily won the bonus points shield for their positive participation in the day.
The carnival was such a success because of the enormous support from staff and parents who barely stopped for 10 minutes all day. A hint to Year 3 students; join the fun, pass level 6 State-Swim and swim for your faction and school like our fantastic champions listed below:
Year 4 Mia – Braithwaite, R/Up-Ruby – Shakespeare, James – Shakespeare, R/Up-Rohan – Braithwaite
Year 5 Madeleine – Shakespeare, R/Up- Sula – Menzies, Finn – Shakespeare, R/Up-Jaymon – Menzies
Year 6 Emma – Menzies, R/Up-Eve – Braithwaite, Stephen – Braithwaite, R/Up- Sam – Braithwaite

TENNIS
During Weeks 2 and 3 of this term, all students from Year 1 to Year 6 participated in a tennis clinic conducted by local tennis coach Peter Gerrans. All the students participated with much enthusiasm and many tried some of the challenging drills. During the clinic, students were involved in learning skills and participating in fun, modified games. The tennis clinics conducted by Peter at the school, support our Physical Education as well as our school tennis program by providing expert advice and tuition. The program culminates at the end of term with Tennis Tournament Finals for Year 4 to 7 students. Mount Hawthorn is fortunate to be part of the National School Tennis Hotshots Program.
We would like to thank Peter Gerrans for donating tennis racquets to the `Tennis Stars` on the day of the clinics. The following students are our prize winners:

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY
Several thousand schools around Australia participated in Ride2School Day last Friday. What a fantastic response it was at Mount Hawthorn Primary School. All the bike racks were full and there were bikes and scooters padlocked to the perimeter fencing of the school. It was great to see 187 bicycles and 53 scooters on Friday with a big thanks to Mr Gryta’s Year 5 for advertising the day. Many thanks to the parents who supported their children, continuing to keep kids active by riding, scooting, skating and walking to school. It was also notable to decrease in the traffic around the school and hopefully we can encourage more students to ride regularly.
