I have really enjoyed returning to Mount Hawthorn and catching up with students, staff and parents. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Jarman, Mrs Selley and Mrs Rock in my absence and appreciate their commitment to the school and the endless hours they put into the role.
The School’s Board and P&C have also continued to support the staff in ensuring we are catering for the needs of our students and will be pivotal in future school planning and associated campus planning.
I really enjoyed a very busy first week especially observing the leadership from our wonderful Year 6 leaders at both the ANZAC Service at Axford Park and at the camp at Woodman Point. I must admit I am getting too old to play spotlight with eighty students at 9.00pm on a Wednesday evening. Thanks to Mrs Gillies, Miss French and Mr Lawrence for volunteering their time to attend camp, which is one of the many highlights of the Year 6 program.
I also had the pleasure of attending the service at ANZAC Cottage where Aaron C received a bursary from the Chapple family. I have included Aaron’s Speech below as it encapsulates why he was selected. I would also like to acknowledge one of our ex -students Connor C, for volunteering his time to play the Last Post at the ceremony. His efforts were appreciated by the Diggers and the many people who attended.
Lastly and importantly I have made a concerted effort to keep my shirt tucked in throughout the first week, however to no avail as I overheard a parent talking to their child yesterday “ he is back and look he still has his shirt untucked”. A bit harsh!!

I would like to say thank you to Marjorie Williams and Anne Chappel for organizing this award and thank you to my teachers at Mount Hawthorn Primary School for selecting me to receive it.
I was very surprised when my name was called in assembly and wasn’t completely sure what I had done to deserve it. Then my parents explained to me that this is about the way I conduct myself but all I have really done is be myself.
In a world where powerful leaders talk about building walls, I have always been encouraged to build bridges by showing kindness and helping others.
I believe in always showing respect to others and knowing that I am also worthy of receiving the same in return.
These are the simple family values I have been taught to follow and I am very humbled and proud to be receiving this award for displaying the same qualities as our ANZAC soldiers.
Thank you.
Year 3 and 5 students will be completing NAPLAN testing on Wednesday, 9 May to Friday, 12 May (catch up day).
Pamphlets have been sent home during Term 1 with these students with information regarding this year’s assessments. Visit the NAPLAN Website for more information.
Term Accounts have been sent home with students this week and your prompt payment for these activities is appreciated. Thank you to the families who have made Voluntary School and P&C Contributions. For those who have not yet paid we are happy to accept payment via credit card (Qkr, Visa or Mastercard), cash or cheque at the school office.
We now offer Qkr (by MasterCard) as an easy to use, secure phone app for making school payments from your mobile phone. Qkr will accept payment using ANY credit/debit card and has a simple checkout function. No information is stored on the mobile phone. We are strongly encouraging all credit card payments to be completed through Qkr particularly for Term Accounts and Voluntary Contributions.
In term 2, we welcome our two Italian Language Assistants, Alberto Ciresola from Verona and Lucia Conterio from Lake Maggiore, Italy. Alberto and Lucia will be assisting Signora Monisse in Italian lessons and focussing on the students’ conversation and fluency. Alberto is being hosted by the Chiswell and Rose families and so far is enjoying the Aussie lifestyle and has even managed a swim at Rotto (special thanks to the Mann-Cork family for their hospitality)! Lucia is being hosted by the Di Rollo and Dean families and is looking forward to putting her teaching studies into good practice.
It’s an extremely busy term in Italian with lots of fun and exciting opportunities for our students to participate in language rich activities. This term’s focus will on “La Nostra Zona” (My Neighbourhood) with visits to our local gelateria “Affogato” and the Year 6 evening out at “Siena’s”, Leederville. Watch this space for more details! We will also have the Mt Lawley SHS students visiting and conducting mini lessons with our Year 3 and 4 students – this is a great opportunity for the students to find out more about the GATE Language program at Mt Lawley.
A wonderful opportunity exists for the Year 4 – 6 students to participate in the WA Languages Association inaugural photography competition – “Languages in our Landscape”. Students have to submit a photo which represents the diversity of living languages in our community. For more details, click HERE
If your child wishes to participate in this competition, please register your interest at mhpsitalian@gmail.com
