I would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers for their ongoing support of the school throughout 2015. It seems every time I look around the school, I bump into parents quietly volunteering their time to benefit the children. To thank everyone individually, I would be here until Christmas 2016, so as a whole, thank you. We simply could not provide the many programs without your support. Through this strong sense of community, the school will continue to reflect the values of Mount Hawthorn into the future.
Some parents who have supported the school will end their association with Mount Hawthorn Primary School this week. On behalf of the community, I thank you for your commitment and dedication in assisting the staff to deliver a quality program. Your efforts have been greatly appreciated and you will always be welcomed at Mount Hawthorn Primary School. We would like to wish each and every family a wonderful Christmas filled with food and books that the whole family can enjoy. Dale Mackesey
From the Associate/Acting Principal
I would like to acknowledge the many staff, parents, community members and support services I have had the pleasure of working with this year. My main area of focus is the early year’s classrooms which are always vibrant, engaging and buzzing with activity from both students and parents. Our parent participation is very high in these classes and the strong partnerships formed between staff and parents to support the children is evident in many ways. I have also enjoyed working with all staff across the school in the past few weeks and thank everyone who have supported me in my role. I wish all families a very Merry Christmas and relaxing summer break and look forward to 2016. Lorena Rock
We will see some minimal staffing changes for 2016. We welcome the return of Miss Mara Pizzino, Mr Geoff Pearson, Ms Marie Breen and Mrs Bev Lawrence, who have all been on extended leave. We will in turn lose some staff who have competently filled these vacancies. Mrs Janine Barndon (PP Room 19), Ms Marnie Adlam (Kindy Red) and Miss Anne Scott (Year 3 Rm 36) will be leaving us and I would like to acknowledge their contribution to our school and wish them all the best for their future endeavours. Alek Gryta and Desie Cronin will also be taking Long Service Leave for first semester next year and we wish them an enjoyable break.
SEMESTER 2 REPORTS
Semester 2 student reports will be handed out today and will include a copy of this year’s Annual Report. In the event that your child is not here to collect it, we will post it home.
HEADS UP CAMPAIGN
Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan and Minister Liza Harvey made a special visit to Mount Hawthorn Primary to congratulate our Year 4 and 5 students for the wonderful “HEADS UP” message they are spreading to drivers. Each student designed a poster to encourage drivers to be alert and don’t be distracted over the festive season. The students were rewarded for their efforts with a HEADS UP cap. The winning entry will be seen on the back window of police vehicles throughout the campaign. Cherrie Fletcher
Edu-dance was a great success again this year and the evidence was in the children’s performances at their finale concerts. Mrs Voisey created spectacular, fast paced routines that were full of energy. It was hard to tell who enjoyed it more – the children or the parents.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
The graduating students would like to thank the Year 6 teachers, Mrs Gillies, Miss French and Mr Lawrence for all their hard work and dedication this year. Their efforts did not go unnoticed and the outstanding Graduation Ceremony was enjoyed by staff, students, parents and the community. Congratulations to Eve from Room 22 (Dux), and all the students who received Graduation Awards. We are also proud to acknowledge the many students who have gained entry into specialist programs at Perth Modern, Churchlands SHS, Mount Lawley SHS and Shenton College.
Erin from Year 6 Room 23 was presented with a certificate and prizes by Eleni Evangel MLA. Erin’s design was selected to be used for Eleni’s Christmas Cards.
SCHOOL BOARD COMMENDATIONS
On Friday, 4 December Michael Jenkin (School Board Chair) presented Jodi Taylor, Jenny Emmeluth and Pam Fisher with Commendation Certificates to acknowledge their long term commitment to supporting our school.
JUNIOR PRIMARY CHRISTMAS CONCERT
All Pre-primary to Year 3 classes performed in the annual Christmas Concert this morning. The classes practised their items during their weekly music lessons with Mrs Hardman and Mrs Smart during the term. A wonderful celebration of the music and early childhood programs our students participate in. At the concert, Ms Bree Rampal (Year 1, Room 1) was presented with a certificate that recognises her recent gain of Level 3 Classroom Teacher status. Well done Ms Rampal. You really are a teacher and a ‘half’.
CHURCHLANDS FINALE CONCERT
On Tuesday, 8 December, all students in the school’s instrumental program and school choir performed at the Churchlands Senior High School Concert Hall. This annual event is held to celebrate the outstanding music programs that our students are involved in at Mount Hawthorn Primary School. Many thanks to all the School of Instrumental Music teachers, Katie Hardman and the parents who have supported the programs over the past year.
On Tuesday, 8 December Year 5 Room 39 had a great sporting experience with a visit from the Perth Wildcats for a basketball clinic. Akeevah won the experience as a prize for her class. The session was led by Wildcats Jesse Wagstaff and Shawn Redhage, who put the class to the test with dribbles, alley-oops and 3 point scores. They also very generously signed some team photos and merchandise. Mr Gryta will place some more photos and information on his class blog.
Room 35 and Mr McKenzie were thrilled to donate just over $300 to Retriever Dog Rescue. Thank you to everyone who made a gold coin contribution.

We will also hold our Annual General Meeting on Monday, 22 February 2016. This will be your chance to join the committee or volunteer to help on some special initiatives for the year ahead. It’s a very rewarding experience and sets a great example of the benefits of service to your school community to your kids. There are roles for people with only a little time to give and roles requiring a more regular commitment, something for everyone! Enjoy the festive season, be safe, happy and have fun and we look forward to seeing you in 2016.
Loftus Recreation Centre will be offering a range of kids’ activities within our very popular 3 hour junior school holiday activities, designed to get children active and social over the school holidays.
